Candidates must be available for in-person, online and hybrid instruction, and for both daytime and evening courses. Candidates must possess the ability to obtain a Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) clearance and maintain it annually, at all Michigan correctional facilities.
Essential Functions
1. Planning and Curriculum Development:
- Participate actively in department meetings and curriculum planning to maintain high academic standards and meet the evolving needs of students and the workforce.
- Plan lessons thoroughly on a daily, weekly, and semester basis to implement established curriculum and support students in achieving academic goals.
- Develop and maintain course outlines, updating them annually to reflect relevant, current content and promote higher-order thinking skills.
2. Instructional Delivery:
- Teach 33-35 credit hours per academic year, primarily in Quantitative Reasoning and Statistics, with potential assignments in Algebra, Calculus, or other math-related areas.
- Utilize diverse teaching methods that consider identities and individual learning styles and foster a positive and supportive classroom climate.
- Regularly assess student learning through various techniques, including questioning, quizzes, presentations, writing assignments, and exams, ensuring alignment with learning outcomes.
3. Course and Syllabus Management:
- Develop and distribute contemporary syllabi that outline availability, course goals, learning outcomes, and expectations, ensuring alignment with Jackson College’s curriculum standards, as established by the Academic Council.
- Make meaningful connections with students in both online and in-person settings, using specific engagement techniques to support their success.
- Encourage student growth through rigorous and relevant coursework, setting high expectations for achievement.
4. Advising and Mentorship:
- Advise students on academic programs, transfer, career goals, and course selections, offering guidance that supports their personal and professional development.
- Serve as Lead Faculty, as required, for specific mathematics courses as assigned, overseeing course materials, assessments, and adjunct faculty mentorship.
- Be accessible to students beyond the classroom through scheduled office hours and informal communication, demonstrating respect, empathy, and a commitment to their success.
5. Collaboration and College Engagement:
- Work effectively with colleagues in a team environment to support student learning and success.
- Participate in department and collegewide committees, contributing to academic planning, program reviews, and student success initiatives.
- Uphold College values and contribute to campus belonging initiatives, supporting a culture of respect.
6. Faculty Development and Lifelong Learning:
- Maintain current knowledge in mathematics, statistics, and instructional methods, incorporating new research and technology to enhance teaching effectiveness.
- Engage in professional development activities, staying at the forefront of trends in mathematics education and continuously improving instructional practices.
- Participate in professional organizations as appropriate to maintain professional ties and bring relevant insights back to the College.
- Participate in College Convocation professional development activities.
7. College and Community Involvement:
- Actively support the College’s mission and participate in activities that promote its Strategic Agenda, vision and goals.
- Attend Commencement and other key college events, supporting students and representing the Mathematics and Engineering Department.
- Contribute to community outreach, including representing the College at local schools, participating in advisory committees, and supporting community education initiatives.
GENERAL RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Respond promptly and thoroughly to requests from the College’s academic leaders, department heads, and committee chairs.
- Consistently meet instructional schedules and commitments, maintaining a high level of professionalism and accountability.
- Establish and uphold a respectful and belonging classroom environment, treating all members of the college community with humanity and dignity.
- Comply with all college policies, uphold the student code of conduct, and comply with all aspects of the faculty union contract.
PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES AND ABILITIES:

Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Quantitative Reasoning, Statistics, or a closely related field.
- Teaching experience in mathematics, statistics, or quantitative reasoning.
Preferred:
- Two years of teaching experience at the community college level.
- Specific experience in teaching Quantitative Reasoning or Statistics.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, frequently sit, and occasionally stand or walk. The employee may occasionally need to lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and focus adjustment.
