DESCRIPTION

UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is growing in the diverse areas of professional educational programs, cutting-edge research, and pharmacy services. Research areas specific to this position posting are related to medication safety in the ambulatory care setting, practice-based research, collaborative practice, and a pharmacogenomics education program. Under general supervision, the incumbent is to make significant independent contributions to the development and completion of large-scale collaborative research projects, to the design and implementation of cutting-edge experimental techniques, to the development of novel analytical methods/protocols, and to the establishment and operation of research facilities. Plan and oversee the installation, operation, and maintenance of analytical instrumentation within the new Collaborative Mass Spectrometry Innovation Center & Dorrestein Laboratory, both at the UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. Develop experimental workflows in conjunction with collaborators from other departments at UCSD, as well as from local industry. Use knowledge, skills, and experience with mass spectrometry to develop research goals, carry-out complex experiments & data analysis, and provide prompt feedback regarding experimental results in the form of written reports. Provide technical feedback and training to researchers both within the Collaborative Mass Spectrometry Innovation Center & Dorrestein Lab. Ensure compliance with lab, department, university, state, and federal safety-related mandates and guidelines for the use of chemical and biological hazards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical understanding and practical knowledge of biology, chemistry, molecular biology, and biochemistry attained through an advanced degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to research, design and implement original and effective strategies for coordinating and managing projects on a daily basis. Experience and proficiency in protocol design and implementation

  • Experience in making significant contributions to research designs of various ongoing research projects. Demonstrated skill in problem solving and critical thinking.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office programs, including filemaker, word processing, spreadsheet, and graphics software; willingness and ability to update and increase Mac/PC skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Excellent communication skill. Ability to interact with varied personalities at all levels of the organization, exercising good judgement, diplomacy, and flexibility to promote a positive working relationship with colleagues and collaborators.

  • Excellent computer and data management skills. Demonstrated expertise in a variety of general programs, such as MS Excel, MS Word, MS Powerpoint, Adobe Illustator & Photoshop. Additional experience with programming and scripting languages such as Python, Visual Basic, and HTML.

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise with mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography instruments from a variety of different manufacturers, including instrument control software and data analysis software.

  • Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, and repairing lab equipment such as mass spectrometers, HPLCs, UPLCs, centrifuges, incubators, vacuum concentration systems, and nitrogen generators.

  • Demonstrated skills in supervising laboratory staff and providing advanced training in the use of laboratory equipment and analytical software/tools. Experience facilitating organization and efficiency in a fast-paced, complex laboratory environment.

  • Demonstrated skill and experience in writing and editing material for grants, reports, and peer-reviewed scholarly publications

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $66,441 - $106,839 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.82 - $51.17

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
