Position Summary
Reporting to the Department Chair of Chemistry, the Laboratory Technician provides logistical support to the instructional laboratories, including setting up and organizing supplies and equipment for laboratory experiments.
The Technician also maintains the common chemical storage spaces, purchases chemicals and equipment, coordinates the storage and disposal of hazardous waste, and maintains a chemical inventory of all instruction lab supplies and chemicals. They oversee the maintenance of laboratory spaces and coordinate the maintenance of shared instrumentation within the department.
They are responsible for chemical hygiene and laboratory safety and ensure that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Fire Department of New York (FDNY) regulations are met within the department’s laboratory spaces.
Essential Functions
- Prepares, sets up, and organizes instructional laboratories for student experiments, including distributing chemicals, supplies, and equipment for laboratory experiments.
- Are present and available during teaching lab sessions to provide logistical support, assist with check-in/check-out procedures, provide supplies and chemicals, provide technical assistance with equipment and instruments, and support instructional staff with overseeing lab safety protocols.
- Maintains documentation related to instructional labs, such as procedures for setting up experiments and student data, such as spectra.
- Organizes and maintains the department’s chemical stockrooms and solvent storage areas and maintains an inventory of supplies, materials, and chemicals for the instructional labs. Maintains an accurate chemical inventory of all instructional lab supplies.
- Coordinates the maintenance of research and teaching laboratories by working with the University’s facilities and IT departments.
- Procures laboratory supplies and chemicals for instructional and research laboratories using the University’s procurement systems. Works with vendors to reduce procurement costs and to identify and review new products.
- Tracks and receives shipments of chemicals and lab supplies and incorporates them into the chemical inventory.
- Coordinates chemical waste management and disposal for instructional and research labs.
- Administers chemical hygiene and safety plans in the department’s labs. Ensures compliance with all safety regulations and requirements. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, and FDNY safety regulations. Maintains an FDNY C-14 certification and other safety certifications as needed.
- Supports and maintains shared department instrumentation. Schedules maintenance visits and coordinates with instrument suppliers to maintain instrument service contracts.

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience
- B.S. in Chemistry or Biochemistry
- Minimum of one year of experience working in a science laboratory
Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to work independently.
- Expertise in safety protocols and familiarity with current OSHA and NYS environmental safety policies.
- General computer proficiency.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and accuracy.
- Knowledge of common laboratory procedures.
- Understanding of Material Safety and Data Safety sheets.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in teams.
- Capable of supporting collaborative research and working with faculty in modernizing laboratory experiments for undergraduates.
- Well-versed in laboratory safety protocols for undergraduate chemistry labs
- Knowledgeable of OSHA and NFPA regulations.
- Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. in Chemistry or related field
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair user-addressable issues with instruments is preferred.
Minimum Starting Salary: $62,640
Maximum Starting Salary: $62,640
Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
