Engineering Online, the College’s distance education program in the College of Engineering at NC State University, provides high-quality distance education options designed to meet the needs of working professionals. This program offers professional development courses, graduate and undergraduate degrees, and certificates with the same academic rigor as on-campus courses. Coursework is completed through a combination of electronic submissions and locally proctored exams to ensure flexibility without compromising standards.
Engineering Online offers 19 master’s degrees, 15 graduate certificates, and an undergraduate certificate in computer programming. Additionally, two ABET-accredited site-based bachelor’s degree programs are available through partnerships with institutions across North Carolina: Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Systems in Havelock and Mechatronics in Asheville in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA), a liberal arts university also in the University of North Carolina system.
Essential Job Duties
NC State University’s College of Engineering invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor to support our Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) Mechatronics program, based at the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA) campus. This position offers a unique opportunity to teach, coordinate laboratory experiences, and facilitate remote classes delivered from NC State’s Raleigh campus.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Teach Joint Engineering Mechatronics (JEM) courses, including courses such as Introduction to Mechatronics and Logic or Circuits, along with senior design classes.
- Coordinate and manage laboratory sessions and ensure a cohesive learning environment.
- Facilitate synchronous classes from NC State Raleigh faculty, including attending sessions, proctoring exams, and coordinating student help sessions.
- Provide academic support to students as needed to encourage successful outcomes.
Reporting Structure and Collaboration:
The selected candidate will report to the Program Director of the BSE Mechatronics program in Asheville. Close collaboration with NC State faculty, staff, and UNCA personnel is essential to ensure alignment and quality in instructional delivery.

Other Responsibilities
- Assistance with program marketing projects
- Mentoring of the engineering students
Minimum Education and Experience
- Requires doctor’s degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience in teaching or training of engineering students and/or or professional engineers at the university level.
Other Required Qualifications
- Ability to communicate clearly in both written and oral communications.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Experience in using engineering software, such as Solid Works, MatLab, Excel, etc.
- Proven ability to coordinate multiple projects, follow-through with projects and attention to detail.
- Strong commitment in helping students develop skills and competencies in engineering
- Demonstrated ability to teach engineering concepts at the undergraduate level.
- Excellent managerial and organizational skills.
- Ability to travel to Raleigh for occasional meetings, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Industry work experience.
- FE and PE licenses in electrical engineering.
