About the Department

The primary function of the Undergraduate Admissions office is to identify, attract, and enroll first year and transfer students with outstanding academic ability and potential. The department’s efforts are commensurate with NC State University’s annual and long-term enrollment goals for the University.

Essential Job Duties

The purpose of this position is to assist Undergraduate Admissions in identifying, recruiting and enrolling a new academically strong student class each academic year. Admissions counselors provide customer service, support and recruitment to prospective students, families and stakeholders (school counselors and college bound organization contacts especially). They will process applications and supporting materials, in addition to articulating admissions policies and procedures to students, parents and counselors. 

Additionally, admissions counselors review academic credentials of first-year and transfer applicants to make appropriate decisions regarding admissibility to the University. They will also manage customer service inquiries for the office (email, phone calls, in person) and maintain excellent customer service for prospective students, applicants and their associated contacts with NC State.

Other Responsibilities

  • Represent NC State University to prospective students, parents and stakeholders by participating in such events including high school visits, college fairs and recruitment events.
  • Extensive contact with the public by phone, email, and in person (within and outside of North Carolina).
  • Extensive travel, both in state and out of state, and considerable public speaking. Weekend work will be occasionally required (for travel and special events).
  • Assist with office operations and administrative duties daily including but not limited to answering phone calls, greeting campus visitors, responding to email inquires, application processing, transfer credit processing and assisting with other special projects.
  • Present information sessions each week on campus for prospective students and their parents.
  • Counsel prospective students and their families, providing information about the University and its programs of study and admission standards, policies and procedures.
  • Review academic credentials of freshmen applicants to make appropriate admissions decisions, based on a holistic review of the application and supporting documents, including specific degree requirements and student characteristics which would indicate success in these areas of study.
  • Majority of work is conducted in person, with occasional remote work throughout the year.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Ability to exercise judgment and work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively as a team member.
  • Strong organization and time management skills to ensure scheduled deadlines.
  • Computer proficiency – ability to learn and use computerized management information systems (databases).
  • Demonstrated ability to make accurate and consistent interpretations of a broad variety of academic and/or administrative policies and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion, particularly in matters relative to sensitive or confidential student records, personnel or organizational matters.
  • Work requires in-depth analysis and counseling skills along with independent judgment and discretion to render appropriate admissions decisions in an increasingly competitive market.
  • Flexibility to travel for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Experience in a University work setting
