The Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTRI) was established to provide education, training and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area that encompasses four hospital systems, two universities and four biomedical research organizations. It is under the direction of Gary Firestein, MD, Dean for Translational Research at UC San Diego.
Under the supervision of the Administrative Nurse, provide primary nursing to pediatric and adult volunteers in a clinical research unit, including but not limited to, drug administration, infusions, assisting with biopsies, glucose tolerance testing, monitoring vital signs, IV insertions and phlebotomy. Assist Principal Investigators in the conduct of research by providing nursing expertise in the recruitment, treatment, and monitoring of patients involved in clinical trials and other research studies, in the collection and analysis of patient data, and in the preparation of research documents for the submission to Institutional Review Boards, research sponsoring entities, and regulatory agencies. Organize and manage inpatient and outpatient functions as assigned. Review protocols and attend in-service presentations for new protocols. Advise research personnel on proper nursing skills required to perform the research study. Participate in quality assurance. Supervise non-licensed clinical staff. Perform venipuncture, starting and maintaining IV lines, conscious sedation, and processing blood samples is required. At least one year of acute care nursing is required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSCurrent State of California Registered Nurses (RN) license.
BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART w/in 6 months of hire date.
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred.
Six (6) months or more of RN experience. At least one (1) year of acute care nursing.
Ability to draw blood, start IV lines, collect specimens and administer medications via all routes.
Knowledge of standard patient care equipment such as EKG, oximeter, blood pressure monitor, IV pumps, pipettes, centrifuge and ability to operate properly.
Current knowledge utilizing basic nursing assessment. Comfortable with adopting new therapies in a research setting.
Knowledge of UCSD nursing policies, HIPAA requirements, IRB compliance, JCAHO regulations and federal guidelines for human research and procedures and ability to communicate, teach and train others.
Ability to apply urine bags to pediatric and adult patients.
Ability to meet the Clinical Nurse II Job Performance Standards.
Knowledge of medications, indications, dosage ranges, side effects, and potential toxicity.
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language and utilize medical terminology appropriately.
Ability to make independent clinical decisions in patient care matters.
Ability to understand clinical research protocols and carry out specialized clinical research procedures such aspharmacokinetic sampling, gene therapy, chemotherapy.
Willing to perform all tasks necessary to unit functioning and patient care.
Ability to work accurately and quickly under pressure.
Ability to set priorities and organize work.
Knowledge of performance improvement and research process.
ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within 6 months of hire date.
Certification as a clinical research coordinator.
Certification in PALS and Chemotherapy.
Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Must be able to obtain annual TB/Fit test clearances.
Must be willing to commute between Hillcrest Medical Center, La Jolla ACTRI facility and ACTRI at Rady's.
Must be willing to work a flexible schedule - days, evenings and nights as needed.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $170,485 - $170,485 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $81.65 - $81.65
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
