Human Resources Manager
The School of Education (SOE) Office of the Dean seeks a qualified Human Resources (HR) Manager. This role functions in multiple HR areas including, but not limited to organizational development, recruitment, onboarding, graduate academic appointments, required trainings and child protection clearance management, employment visa management, performance management, professional development, and employee engagement. This role works with all members of the School of Education including faculty, staff, graduate academic appointees, student, and temporary employees and is involved in the full life cycle of employment.
The main responsibilities of this role are:
- In partnership with the Director of Human Resources assist with organizational development, professional development, and employee engagement.
- Understand and ensure compliance with employee policies and procedures and is responsible for communicating and troubleshooting these to ensure consistency and efficiency in HR functions throughout the school.
- Compile, analyze, and report on employment data.
- Special HR projects throughout the year.
- Review and approve various employee job descriptions, requisitions, and offers in the university applicant tracking system (Talent Center).
- Manage and oversee the appointment process of Graduate Student Assistants, Graduate Student Researchers, Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows for the school. This includes facilitating contract letters, reviewing details for accuracy, entering the contracts and appointment forms into the Pitt hiring systems, and ensuring a smooth onboarding process for up to 100 appointments each academic year.
- Create interview guides and communicate recruitment best practices for positions throughout the school.
- Manage the onboarding process for all employee types ensuring efficient hiring and completion of new hire paperwork, clearances, and trainings.
- Manage and troubleshoot employee Child Protection Clearance completion and reverifications for SOE employees.
- Ensure a smooth off-boarding process for employees of the school.
The ideal candidate has a solid foundational knowledge of human resource procedures and practices, organizational development, a high level of attention to detail, service orientation, and strong critical thinking skills.

Oversees and directs human resources activities for department personnel, faculty, staff, post-doctoral students, graduate students, and undergraduate students/work study. Acts as consultant to managers for personnel related functions. Ensures personnel utilization is carried out in accordance with department, school, and University policies and enforces departmental systems and procedures. Performs administrative functions.
- Oversees and directs human resources activities for department personnel, including payroll and visa requests for faculty, staff, post-doctoral students, graduate students, and undergraduate students/work study.
- Manages hirings, appointments, promotions, joint appointments, tenure clocks, faculty packages, timekeeping and payroll processing, visa management, annual appraisals for faculty and staff, compensation administration, and employee relations.
- Gathers, interprets, and analyzes personnel, financial, and budgetary data to formulate responses for internal and external requests.
- Creates offer letters, prepares and edits job descriptions, and coordinates orientation sessions for new employees.
- Assist with employee record guidance; acts as a consultant to managers for personnel-related functions.
- Reviews and enforces department systems and personnel procedures to ensure personnel utilization is carried out in accordance with department, school, and University policies, principles, regulations, and procedures. Initiate any necessary changes.
- Performs administrative functions, including preparing letters and correspondence; telephone, email, in-person, and online communications; and maintaining records and databases.
Most work is performed on a computer with the option to use a stand-up desk. Travel to various university offices and/or outside organizations required. Minimal physical lifting, pulling, pushing when needed. Verbal and written communication required.
