Research Technologist

Job Description

The Department of Otolaryngology is seeking a Research Technologist. The primary duties include but are not limited to the following: They will be responsible for independently performing routine research testing and contributing to the general maintenance of the lab, supplies and equipment. Use basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Perform laboratory experiments by following common protocols or with instruction. This may require techniques associated with molecular biology. May also be responsible for tissue bank inventory and management.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in conducting experiments related to: Molecular biology (PCR, genotyping), cell culture related work (cochlear tissue dissection, plating, maintenance) and preparing tissue samples for immunohistochemistry, images acquisition of tissue samples using a confocal microscope and mage analysis using Nis Element software, Image J or Imaris.
  • Laboratory management includes purchasing and cataloguing supplies, maintenance of lab benches and equipment, inventory, preparing stock solutions.
  • Mouse husbandry includes animal surveillance and genotyping.
  • Must operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and utilizes laminar flow hood.
  • Operates lab computers for data entry and extraction.
  • Will utilize in vivo models in experiments following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines.
  • Inoculate tumors, sacrifice and dissect animal remains as required.
  • Prepares tissue for study utilizing histochemical techniques. Maintains accurate data records.
  • Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation courses in the workplace.
  • Completes annual University biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training as appropriate.
  • Use sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.
  • Use universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Monitor inventory levels, orders material and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($43,680 targeted; Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: M-F 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
