2025 Graduate - Engineer - Cyber-Physical Systems Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Have you considered the military, intelligence, and civilian capabilities that are possible with the proliferation of low-cost sensing, computing, and control technologies?

Are you interested in developing, defending, and defeating systems of these technologies to solve real-world challenges?

If you're excited to work in the field of Cyber-Physical Systems, our multi-disciplinary team of engineers and developers is excited to talk!

We are seeking Cyber-Physical Systems Engineer to help us deliver and contend with emerging intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting (ISR&T) capabilities. Wait… what in the world is a Cyber-Physical System (CPS)? There are lots of examples of CPS, but we are concerned with devices that autonomously sense, process information, and interact with the physical world. Our multi-disciplinary teams build CPS prototypes that use these capabilities to provide exquisite situational awareness to users in the defense, security, and health sectors. We employ a wide range of ground breaking technologies from machine learning to autonomous platforms to power our solutions. Meanwhile, we also help our sponsors understand and counter the threats posed by the proliferation of CPS technology being employed by our adversaries.

As a member of our team, you will...

  • Support and lead the development of CPS systems that range from tiny autonomous sensors to entire "smart" environments
  • Evaluate CPS systems to assess their capabilities/limitations in light of real-world applications
  • Conceive and implement novel methods to strengthen or impair the functionality of existing and emerging CPS
  • Propose and defend groundbreaking concepts involving the application, defense, and/or defeat of CPS
  • Explore opportunities to translate findings into white papers, proposals, and presentations/publications

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Graduating with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or Aerospace Engineering
  • Are proficient in software development using Python, C, and/or C++ for Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills, and are skilled at developing relationships across diverse teams
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you are knowledgeable in one or more of the following...

  • Applications of sensing technology such as 2D/3D cameras, LIDAR, RADAR, microphones, passive infrared (PIR) sensors, etc.
  • Software development for low-power, edge computing devices, such as Raspberry Pi, ODROID, and/or NVIDIA Jetson platforms
  • Software development for embedded devices, such as Arduino, ESP32, and/or Nordic nRF platforms
  • Machine learning for detection, classification, and identification tasks using common frameworks such as TensorFlow, Pytorch, and/or MXNet
  • Low-power, wireless messaging protocols such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, BLE, and/or LoRaWAN
  • Geolocating and mapping techniques with and without GPS information, including vision-based techniques (SLAM)
  • Autonomous vehicle guidance and control algorithms and software
  • Development and integration of systems using the Robot Operating System (ROS)
  • Mechanical component and system design, including mechanical CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Creo
  • Digital and analog circuit design and board layout, including electronic CAD tools such as Altium
