Associate Director, Entrepreneurship

Job Description

FastForward is a coordinated suite of resources designed to efficiently move technologies from startup to marketplace. Part of Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV), FastForward serves as a catalyst for the advancement and commercialization of an array of innovations that are derived both at the University and from collaborative projects elsewhere. The goal of FastForward is to help early ventures increase the probability of realizing their potential and bring innovation and life-changing technologies to market.


We are seeking an Associate Director, Entrepreneurship with an extensive background and affinity for startups, offering direct case management for both established startups and newly forming companies. This position is pivotal in representing JHTV within the entrepreneurial ecosystem, engaging with other support organizations to foster a thriving environment for innovation. The Associate Director will work in coordination with a junior program manager to oversee programs that contribute to the formation / growth of startup companies and the support and development of ecosystems around Hopkins, in Baltimore and across the State of Maryland. The Associate Director reports to the Director, Technology Incubation and Acceleration working across her team to support campus innovators and other members of the ecosystem with programs, facilities, and other resources.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Startup Portfolio Management

  • Directly managing existing startups within our portfolio and new companies being formed, providing guidance and support throughout their development.
  • Oversees all startup related activities.
  • Oversees services and programs to help Johns Hopkins inventors/entrepreneurs launch startup companies, including educational programming, fundraising needs, and business team building.
  • Coordinates and delivers resources to advise faculty and student startup teams on business planning, startup growth and milestones.
  • Continue to develop and curate a comprehensive resource library for startups, providing essential tools and guidance on HR management, accounting practices, legal services, payroll processing, and other foundational business needs.
  • Responsible for monitoring and reporting key performance metrics of our startups, including capital raised, scientific advancements, strategic partnerships, and other critical indicators of progress.


Ecosystem Representation

  • Serving as the JHTV representative in ecosystem convenings with other entrepreneurial support organizations, advocating for and advancing the interests of the startups.


Team Leadership

  • Overseeing a junior programming person, providing mentorship and direction to ensure effective program delivery.


Strategic Collaboration

  • Working closely with the Director of Technology Incubation and Acceleration to contribute to strategic planning and execution, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • This role requires a blend of management skills, strategic thinking, and a passion for innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Proven experience in a startup environment, with a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities they present.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and inspire a team.
  • Excellent communication and networking abilities, capable of effectively representing the organization in various forums.
  • A strategic thinker with a track record of executing plans that foster company growth and innovation.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or related field.
  • Four years’ related business experience. 
  • Startup and business management experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.
  • Master’s Degree in Business or related field.
  • Professional experience in an academic environment.
  • Experience managing a team.

Starting Salary Range: $85,500-$117,700-$149,800 (budget target $135,000 commensurate w/experience)
