Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Present weekly orientation sessions for international faculty and scholars. Collect and review immigration documentation for newly arriving international scholars. Assist international advisors meet immigration-reporting deadlines. Host and organize student/scholar programming activities. General office duties include answering and screening telephone calls, greeting and screening visitors and The Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) at the University of Maryland provides immigration and cultural advising to more than 4,000 international students and 1,000 international faculty and staff. ISSS provides assistance and information on matters pertaining to the international students and scholars who come to UM to fulfill their educational and professional goals. This office also facilitates their transition to life at this university and the United States through programs that enhance interaction between the international and domestic populations.

ISSS is offering a graduate assistantship working with international faculty and scholars beginning spring 2025. The position will provide the GA an opportunity to become familiar with visitor and employment-based visas and the process to welcome and assist international faculty/scholars in joining the University. The assistantship provides key professional development opportunities including training in SEVIS, J-1 visa and H-1B visa regulations and requirements, and other skills specific to running an international student/scholar services office.

Duties:
Present weekly orientation sessions for international faculty and scholars. Collect and review immigration documentation for newly arriving international scholars. Assist international advisors meet immigration-reporting deadlines. Assist scholars meet health insurance requirements. Host and organize student/scholar programming activities. General office duties include answering and screening telephone calls, greeting and screening visitors and providing administrative support with special projects and events as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a degree-seeking graduate student at the University of Maryland, preferably in the field of Human Resource Management, International Education, or Higher Education. U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residence required by U.S. federal regulations for DSO/ARO certification. Position also requires a background check.

Excellent customer service, public speaking and written communication skills are required. Ability to manage simultaneous projects. Comfortable with instructional videos and presentation software. Candidate must also be self-motivated to workindependently, have a high attention to detail, be organized, take initiative and excel in a fast-pacedenvironment.

Preferences:

Prior experience in a cross-cultural setting as well as an office environment is preferred.
