Essential Job Duties

As an integral member of the research team, the Research Technician will perform a variety of duties in support of several ongoing human health research studies, including processing biological samples, maintaining sample tracking databases, and coordinating supply stocks and sample transfer across multiple study sites. This position requires a strong work ethic, team oriented attitude, attention to detail, and familiarity with commonly used laboratory equipment. Such equipment includes, but is not limited to, single- and multi-channel pipettes, centrifuge, and autoclaves. The ideal candidate will have experience mentoring or teaching basic laboratory techniques to students or those new to a lab setting and also have a strong desire to further develop such mentorship skills. All tasks must be performed in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory environment following strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Specific duties will include but are not limited to:
1. Sample management: Processing biological (e.g., blood, urine, saliva, feces, etc.) and environmental samples for appropriate cryogenic and long-term storage for future use in molecular, biological, and chemical analyses. Managing physical sample storage and electronic database tracking of samples.
2. Overseeing undergraduate students in the lab: Teaching students safe handling of biological material, hand-held aseptic pipetting technique, aliquoting methods, and managing student scheduling. Fostering a respectful and safe learning environment is of the utmost importance.
3. Ordering and inventory: Tracking consumable usage and communicating directly with the lab and project managers to maintain adequate supply levels.
4. Work collaboratively with other members of a diverse study team, including multiple principal investigators, research scientists, project managers, and student workers. Adaptability and ability to manage multiple priorities. Help to identify creative solutions to address challenges in the day-to-day conduct of the on-going studies and laboratory workflow.
5. Protocol management: Writing, revising, implementing, and training new personnel on SOPs, as well as communication with off-site collaborators to harmonize SOPs between sites. Assist with the development of new and modification of existing study protocols and documents.
6. May perform other duties incidental to research activities as assigned.
