Research Technologist

Job Description

The Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking a Research Technologist. Under the supervision of Dr. Abhai Tripathi, the Research Assistant will assist with various research projects, which include but are not limited to Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis, humanized mouse model development, and cell culture.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in mosquito dissection, handling of sporozoites and performing sporozoite motility assays.
  • He/She/They should also know how to make solutions and handle mice.


Research-related responsibilities

  • Conducting literature reviews.
  • Planning, designing, and performing experiments.
  • Perform falciparum cell culture to generate asexual as well as gametocyte cultures.
  • Perform immunofluorescence studies on mature falciparum gametocytes to gamete conversion to tease out molecular events during gametogenesis.
  • Perform RT-PCR assays to validate IFA results.
  • Analyze and effectively present data at lab meetings.
  • Maintain a physical notebook of experimental details and associate research data on a computer.
  • Participate in writing manuscripts and research presentations at scientific meeting.


Additional responsibilities may include, but are not limited to

  • Preparation of standard laboratory solutions, media, and reagents following standard laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Monitor inventory of general laboratory supplies and place orders when needed.
  • Have prior malaria cell culture experience.
  • Familiarity with immunofluorescence assays.
  • Well versed in fluorescence microscopy and image analysis.
  • Some experience with RT-PCR assay is desirable.
  • Possesses sound organizational skills.
  • Have sound documentation skills.
  • Can work on multiple priorities effectively.
  • Can work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Use critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters in related discipline.

Starting Salary Range: Min $15.50 - Max $26.00 (Targeted; $20.75 Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday to Friday: 8:30 am – 5 pm 
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
