The agent in this position will provide leadership for the development, implementation, evaluation, and marketing of an effective educational program in family and consumer sciences, including the areas of foods and nutrition, health and wellness, food preservation techniques such as pressure cooking, canning, freezing, and drying, the ServSafe program, and local foods. The agent will be responsible for recruiting and training Extension Volunteers and serving as an advisor to the Extension Volunteer Association. The agent in this role will also serve as the Co-Chair of the Rockingham County Employee Wellness Committee.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension agents deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Rockingham County is located in northern piedmont North Carolina along the Virginia border with a population of 93,643. The county is situated approximately 20 miles North of Greensboro and Winston Salem and less than an hour from the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian Mountains. Rockingham has a good mix of urban and rural farming communities with agriculture providing a major economic impact to the county with farm income coming primarily from livestock, forages, and field crops. Life in Rockingham provides a rich neighborly atmosphere with basic needs proudly served by the county’s 6 incorporated townships. The county is a great place to live and provides its residents with a multitude of recreational activities and attractions including fishing, hiking, boating, kayaking, great golf, and numerous historic sites. Other Work/Responsibilities

  • Deliver research-based educational programs for both adult and youth audiences in accordance with the mission of North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

  • Work collaboratively with other staff, county agencies, and community partners to develop, market, and facilitate a community-based FCS program focused on nutrition, food safety, food preservation, physical activity, and support for the agricultural community.

  • Use appropriate delivery methods that enhance learning and skill development. Delivery methods may include workshops, classes, seminars, conferences, media, consultations, technical assistance, field trips, tours, and other methods.

  • Seek grants or other appropriate funding sources, as necessary, to support expanded or innovative programming.

  • Deliver food safety for managers certification training courses (such as Safe Plates) on a semi-regular basis.

  • Travel associated with official duties will be required. This may include attending night or weekend meetings, out-of-town county events, training opportunities, and conferences. The agent is required to have personal mobility/transportation and obtain/maintain a valid driver’s license and appropriate liability insurance. Must have willingness to work necessary hours to fulfill job responsibilities.

Minimum Experience/Education

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field (based on a 4.0 scale). The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Master’s degree from an accredited university in a field related to Family & Consumer Sciences, food and nutrition, or a combination of education and work that would prepare someone for this role.

  • Experience planning programs.

  • Experience working effectively as a team member.

  • Experience and knowledge in mass media, marketing, and presentations.

  • Skills in leadership, citizenship, budget management, and public relations.

  • Ability to recruit, train, and supervise volunteer leaders to extend programming to the broadest audience possible.

  • Experience writing grants in support of programs.

Required License or Certification

Valid Driver’s License and reliable, personal transportation required. Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
