Essential Job Duties

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM) at North Carolina State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate beginning either Fall 2024 or Spring 2025. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr. Lincoln Larson in PRTM, Dr. Stacy Supak in the Center for Geospatial Analytics (CGA), Dr. Charlynne Smith in the Recreation Resources Service (RRS), and other researchers associated with the Strive for Access initiative – a project funded by NC State Parks designed to identify current gaps in outdoor recreation opportunities across the state and strive to fill these unmet demands. This research will advance Strive for Access by (1) creating a comprehensive interactive map and spatial database of outdoor recreation opportunities in NC across all federal, state, and local providers, (2) conducting a gap analysis to identify recreation “deserts”, and (3) developing recommendations for collaborative data collection procedures and management to achieve broader equity goals. Results of these projects will help government agencies, NGOs, and other organizations use geospatial analysis tools to address escalating concerns regarding

Key Responsibilities & Opportunities:

• Research: Work with faculty advisors and interdisciplinary collaborators to address environmental justice issues related to outdoor recreation access in NC; Assist with geospatial data management and analysis to develop an interactive map of outdoor recreation opportunities in NC; Contribute to other aspects of Strive for Access project as needed
• Writing & Communication: Lead and assist in development academic presentations, peer-reviewed journal articles, non-technical reports, outreach materials, interactive websites, and other deliverables for NC State Parks and other key stakeholder groups
• Teaching & Mentoring: Train and help supervise undergraduate and graduate research assistants; prepare and deliver content in relevant PRTM or CGA courses as desired
• Professional Development & Networking: Interact with partners from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds, fostering professional connections and potential employment opportunities across multiple sectors.

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm (8 hours/day; 40 hours/week) Some travel and weekend work required.

Department Required Skills

  • Strong background or experience in geospatial analysis and quantitative research methods
  • Strong verbal and writing communication skills, including established publication record
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others from interdisciplinary backgrounds

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • PhD degree in a relevant social science field (e.g., parks and recreation, urban planning, sociology, geography, human dimensions of natural resource management), awarded no more than five years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment
  • Strong interest in environmental justice, especially related to parks and green space
  • Experience working for or with public park agencies
