The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care.
Each year, nearly 25,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.

Essential Job Duties
The Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics (MMD) Laboratory Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operations of the bacteriology, serology/virology, and molecular diagnostic sections of the laboratory. The MMD supervisor provides oversight in the delivery of MMD diagnostic services to support VH clients, college clients, the research community, surrounding DVM clients, and industry clients.
This position manages and provides leadership to 10-15 employees to ensure all laboratory samples are processed and the results are reported promptly. The position also involves the assessment and implementation of developing new laboratory offerings, management of inventory, oversight of lab inspections, and contribution to the IT needs of the CVM diagnostic laboratories.
The MMD Supervisor role requires clear and effective communication with lab staff and the Laboratory Director, engagement with the Laboratory Director on case volume, communication with microbiologist regarding consult requests, requests from clinicians for additional and/or new testing, regular attendance to monthly hospital supervisor meetings, regular attendance to Infectious Disease Committee and Antimicrobial Stewardship meetings, rotation.
The MMD Supervisor role requires collegiality, commitment to growth in the laboratory diagnostics and laboratory personnel, ability to manage multiple projects while also ensuring customer service to clients, and dedication to upholding NCSU CVM values.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or Biological Science and three years of laboratory experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- 2+ years in laboratory leadership (not solely management), across several various disciplines
Other Required Qualifications
- Capable of functioning as a clinical laboratory technician and understanding laboratory equipment and processes.
- Competent in establishing SOPs compliant with both State and Federal regulatory agencies.
- Excellent communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven experience working in or managing veterinary diagnostic laboratories, ensuring familiarity with the unique needs and challenges of veterinary microbiology and molecular diagnostics.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a varied team of laboratory professionals, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment while maintaining high standards of diagnostic service and laboratory operations.
