Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Office of Diversity & Inclusion (ODI) provides leadership and expertise for helping the university achieve its diversity, equity and inclusion goals. Guided by social justice principles, we cultivate a vibrant learning and working community for all members. The following units are within ODI: ADA Compliance, Bias Incident Support Services, Diversity Training & Education, LGBTQ+ Equity Center, Nyumburu Cultural Center, Office of Civil Rights & Sexual Misconduct, Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education (OMSE), and TerrapinSTRONG.

Affiliated with the university’s 1856 Project, the Research Incubator, which is led by the University of Maryland Libraries Special Collections and University Archives, aims to serve as a model for similar projects interested in establishing collaborations between academic institutions and community partners engaging in the investigation of the slave economy as it relates to surrounding communities and the impact and role of an academic institution whose constituents participated in human subjugation and benefited through social/political power and other socioeconomic metrics. The overarching goals for the Research Incubator are to generate best practices documentation, and to create a cohort of campus (undergraduate and graduate students) and community researchers who will use primary and secondary source material to develop and curate data to produce micro-histories of enslaved individuals tied to the University of Maryland. The Research Incubator will launch community training sessions for new researchers on how to access/utilize databases, engage in genealogical research, work with archives and archival material, and launch opportunities to share findings and connect with potential descendant communities. In addition, educational modules will be deployed for course development at UMD and other academic institutions along with varying community/public centers supporting educational programs designed by community practitioners.

The project manager will be responsible for the overall management of the project, including but not limited to, strategic approach for the Research Incubator, hiring and supervising students and community researchers; supervising the work of the academic and training contractors, leading and/or serving on various committees; overseeing project implementation; financial and administrative oversight; reporting; and the assessment of the project. The project manager will ensure that each phase of the grant proposal is started and completed on time and will define the timeframe of each activity. The project manager will oversee the event logistics, including but not limited to programming and organization of the community sessions. The project manager will provide updates to key personnel and will cultivate and maintain working relationships including collaborating with a diverse group of stakeholders at various levels. Lastly, this role will identify and make recommendations to the key personnel on additional funding opportunities to advance and sustain the Research Incubator.

This is a limited appointment not to exceed two (2) years and will report directly to the associate director, Special Collections and University Archives Engagement, Inclusion and Reparative Archives. This appointment is partially funded by grant funding from Mellon Foundation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree; and five (5) years of experience in project/program management in an educational setting. Successfully demonstrated experience building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

OR

Master’s degree in a relevant field of study; and three (3) years of experience in project/program management in an educational setting. Successfully demonstrated experience building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of relevant research and assessment standards.
  • Experience working on team-oriented projects and coordinating with stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated expertise in working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders (internal and external).

  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and tact while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Research interest in African American History, Afro-Indigenous Studies, Public History, Library Information Science, or related fields.
  • Experience in history research for an academic, non-profit, government, or other entity.
  • Passion for supporting marginalized and historically underrepresented student populations and community members.
  • Grant management experience.
  • Knowledge of US slavery generally and Maryland history.
  • Knowledge of Public History and Digital Humanities.
  • Knowledge writing proposals, tracking program activity, and writing different types of report.
  • Knowledge of sponsored projects or contracts administration.
  • Experience managing with the media, and publishing production, particularly with content planning, email marketing strategy, and social media analytics.
  • Demonstrated ability to design surveys and analyze data, and to produce reports and presentations, and develop tools to measure progress.
  • University experience preferred but not required.

Additional Information:

  • This is a limited appointment not to exceed two (2) years. This appointment is partially funded by grant funding from Mellon Foundation.
  • Salary range for this position is low to mid $70s and commensurate with experience.
  • Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA. No visa sponsorship is offered for this position.
