Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Retention Coordinator provides leadership and oversight for college-wide retention programming and ensures consistency in retention efforts across the college. The coordinator plans, executes and evaluates strategies and programs that enhance student retention, persistence, and graduation rates. This role involves coordinating academic and student support services and programs, conducting student success workshops, and supervising retention staff. Reporting to the Dean of Retention, the Coordinator is also responsible for data collection, assessment, and reporting to facilitate continuous improvement of retention initiatives.
 

FUNCTIONAL
 RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervise Support Staff:
    • Oversee daily operations of Retention Advisors.
    • Recruit, supervise, and evaluate staff.
    • Ensure orientation, training, and professional development of staff to meet the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Collaboration:
    • Partner with academic and student affairs departments on progression, retention, and graduation-oriented programming.
    • Work with other departments to standardize materials, training, and to ensure consistent delivery of retention initiatives college-wide.
  • Assessment and Reporting:
    • Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to assess retention initiatives.
    • Request and analyze statistical reports, creating data-driven reports as needed.
    • Develop and implement database applications, spreadsheets, document templates and other technology solutions to automate processes and streamline processes.

  • Budget Management:
    • Prepare and manage budgets for supplies, materials, and marketing tools for retention initiatives.
  • Early Alert Program Coordination:
    • Coordinate training and information sessions for faculty on the Early Alert program.
    • Serve on the Early Alert Team, assessing and improving the system college-wide.
    • Maintain accurate records of Early Alert participation and outcomes using Navigate.
  • Develop and Coordinate Retention Initiatives:
    • Plan and implement programs to support students’ academic, career, and personal development, including mentoring, bridge programs, and support groups.
    • Use data and predictive analytics to design timely and strategic interventions.
  • Support for Students in Academic Difficulty:
    • Assist in developing and coordinating academic advising for at-risk students.
    • Organize retention programs to support faculty and encourage student success through systematic referral and follow-up.
    • Conduct workshops and small group activities on academic success.
    • Provide faculty development focused on retention.
    • Facilitate communication with faculty regarding at-risk students and retention programming.

 

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of counseling principles, policies, and practices especially as applied to higher education.
  • Ability to work with staff from college-wide offices to plan and implement student academic advisement, retention, career and personal counseling programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience or training in developing and implementing retention strategies and programs for student success.
  • Ability to supervise the work of the office and evaluate staff while building a highly effective working team.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Ability to make oral and written presentations.
  • Ability to organize and analyze, to negotiate and communicate effectively while establishing cooperative working relationships with a diverse array of individuals.
  • Ability to interpret college policies and procedures; resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.
  • Ability to interpret data, strong analytical skills including data gathering, analysis, assessment and evaluation, and evidence-based planning.
  • Ability to write/create reports using data analysis.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing budget, equipment and institution resources.
  • Master’s degree in counseling, student personnel services, adult learning, higher education, or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university.

  • Experience working at a community college or other institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to use an electronic student information system and other electronic technology.
