Research Nurse

Job Description

The Center for Immunization Research offers an exciting career for a Research Nurse specializing in Pediatrics. The research nurse will function as a member of a research team comprised of scientists, health professionals, and administrative personnel to evaluate new respiratory vaccines in children. The research nurse will be responsible for the recruitment and clinical nursing care of healthy pediatric volunteers in intensive, respiratory clinical research studies. The primary roles are to conduct independent recruitment activities in pediatric clinics and private practices in the Baltimore/Washington area for participation in NIH-funded vaccine research studies, as well as performing clinical assessments and obtaining research specimens. Job requires collaboration with faculty, lab staff, IRB, and study sponsor on development, implementation, and management of various research studies. The research nurse will have a direct reporting relationship with a senior research nurse.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assess, implement, and manage recruitment and study activities.
  • Interview and educate potential study volunteers and families.
  • Act as liaison between recruitment sites and study staff.
  • Conduct participant pre-screen calls and schedule participants for screening visit.
  • Conduct informed consent process.
  • Review medical records for basic inclusion/exclusion eligibility and assist in study enrollment.
  • Contribute in the development, implementation, and maintenance of standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure studies comply with applicable regulations and guidelines, including Good Clinical Practice and Federal regulations.
  • Implement and ensure compliance of QA/QC activities related to all studies.
  • Perform other recruitment, retention, and research related activities as needed.
  • Ensure security and confidentiality of all data.
  • Conduct chart reviews, preparation and maintenance of study materials, and data collection including but not limited to study documentation, maintenance of volunteer’s medical and research records, maintenance of written study related logs and computer files.
  • Meet regularly (phone or in-person) with Sr. Research Nurse for review of data accuracy and overall progress of recruitment activities.
  • Provide quality and compassionate nursing care, conduct research safety assessments, collect nasal swab and blood specimens and communicate status of research activities to the study team. The nursing activities may be performed in the CIR clinic, designated primary care provider offices, or in the volunteer’s home. In addition, the Research Nurse will engage in continuous professional development, training sessions, and team meetings.


The successful candidate will have

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to effectively interact with pediatric medical care providers, parents, and children.
  • Ability to make study level decisions based on a combination of professional judgment and experience.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
  • Reliable transportation to travel between volunteer’s homes and recruitment sites.
  • Comfortability completing nursing duties in a non-clinical environment.
  • Flexibility in schedule to work evening and rotating weekend on-call hours to accommodate study needs.


*During the Influenza ('the flu') season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients/volunteers or work in patient/volunteer care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.
  • Bachelor's Degree in nursing or related discipline preferred.
  • Previous pediatric inpatient or outpatient clinical experience required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Research and phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Current Research Certification or willing to obtain research certification within three years of hire.
  • Clear, concise, professional oral and written communication.
