Essential Job Duties
North Carolina State University owns and operates a fleet of front-end loading collection trucks to service landfill, recycling and compost dumpsters on campus. Drivers are responsible for the safe operation of front-end loading trucks and efficient service to campus customers along assigned routes. Drivers deliver collected materials to disposal and recycling facilities and perform basic maintenance on equipment. Drivers ensure all safety standards and regulations are met. This position will join a team of dynamic professional drivers in a rewarding and balanced work environment and play a key role in helping the University reach our goal of 70% waste diversion from landfills.
Key responsibilities and duties include, but not limited to:
- Safely operate front-end loading collection vehicles and carrier vehicles to service dumpsters.
- Drive assigned routes and provide collection for a typical average of 50 locations per day. Drivers transport and deliver loads to designated disposal facilities.
- Adjust for unplanned, non-scheduled collection needs and route changes that may arise and ability to be flexible to incorporate operational changes.
- Complete daily pre- and post-trip inspections of equipment/vehicles and daily inspection form and route sheets.
- Utilize on-board technology such as the electronic routing system, scales and cameras.
- Follow all required safety policies and comply with all federal, state, local and rules and regulations.
- Identify and report any potential safety or service issues on route and record and report any incidents to supervisor to prevent accidents or major equipment failure.
- Must operate in a diligent and safe manner, especially in areas of campus with confined spaces and high pedestrian traffic.
- Must be able to operate independently, prioritize tasks and make sound decisions in the field.
- Perform general maintenance on equipment and maintain clean interior and exterior of vehicles. Examples include greasing wear points, adding fluids, changing filters or lights. Help troubleshoot truck/equipment issues requiring repair or maintenance.
- Drivers should possess good customer service and time management skills to ensure routes are completed in a timely and safe manner while maintaining positive relationships with customers and teammates.
- Possess technical knowledge of collection equipment such as front-end loaders, carriers, rear loaders, dumpsters and compactors. May operate other equipment such as forklifts, backhoes and snow removal equipment as needed.
Other Responsibilities
- The ability to operate snow plows, apply brine solution to streets, and use other snow removal equipment as necessary. Perform mandatory role duties as assigned.
- May be required to work at any time and any day.
- Must be available for emergency situations that may require working odd shifts or split shifts.
- All of the above activities may require overtime work.
- Due to the accessibility limitations of campus refuse collection locations and ability to safely operate trucks and equipment, the automated collections groups work hours are outside of normal business hours and extended to a ten hour work day. The normally scheduled work hours are Academic Year 3:00 a.m. – 1:45 p.m., 10 hour shifts, Summer and Holiday Weeks 3:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m., some holidays and weekends. Assigned work days rotate every six to eight weeks based on route assignment and special collection needs for campus.

Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Requires appropriate licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment.
Other Required Qualifications
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
- Knowledge, training and necessary certification or license to uphold all applicable regulations or laws related to driving trucks, operating equipment and performing work in a safe and efficient manner.
- Adherence to safe work practices, strict attendance reliability, and proactive identification and resolution of safety concerns are crucial for this role.
- Ability to perform a detailed DOT pre-trip inspection.
- Ability to perform a variety of recurring and related tasks using steps and processes that are readily understood and that are associated with less complex systems and components.
- Ability to use hand tools, air tools and hydraulic jacks necessary to perform this type of standard repairs and maintenance.
- Ability effectively utilize FleetMind Routing system and to report or address issues related to the FleetMind Routing system.
Preferred Qualifications
Required License or Certification
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class A or B and must be maintained.
- Requires appropriate licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment

Special Instructions
- Collection schedules are Monday – Saturday 3:00 am-11:00 a.m. during the academic year and Monday – Friday 3:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. during the summer and holiday periods. Assigned work days/schedules rotate every six to eight weeks. Drivers typically work between 40 and 48 hours per week depending on staffing.
- This position earns Overtime Pay (time and a half for hours above 40/week), Holiday Pay as well as Shift Premium Pay (an additional 10% of hourly rate when hours worked between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m. exceed half of total daily hours).
- Position receives University benefits package.
