EXPECTATIONS AND NATURE OF THE POSITION


The primary responsibility of this position is to provide quality instruction to Western students. This position will consist of teaching 28 to 30 credits per academic year. Responsibilities will include supporting Western’s Guiding Principles: Learning is Our Purpose, Students are Our Focus, Employees are Our Most Important Resources, The Community is our Partner, Adapting to Change Defines Our Future, and Ethical Standards Guide Our Actions; and upholding the mission of a comprehensive 2-year community college.

It is expected that this individual will teach courses in Information Systems/Cybersecurity, as well as other courses for which they are qualified and assigned; teach in a variety of environments and modes: day offerings, evening offerings, online offerings, hybrid offerings, etc.; assess students in light of the institutional goals, program goals, and course objectives; maintain appropriate scheduled office hours; participate in academic advising; provide service to the program, school, college, and community as assigned by the supervising school chair or elected by peers; develop good working relationships with discipline-related professionals in the College’s Service Area; collaborate with the top transfer institutions to maintain and update articulation agreements and foster transferability opportunities; assist in recruitment activities; mentor part-time faculty and/or new faculty; serve as a community resource in area of expertise; be active in one’s field of expertise; have the ability to lift and/or move up 25 pounds on a regular basis.

It is expected that this individual will accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner, and strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, this individual must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with college personnel and the public. This individual must follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.

 

This position could be evaluated for hybrid or remote work options.

 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR WHICH THIS INDIVIDUAL IS ACCOUNTABLE

 

  1. Teaching responsibilities include but may not be restricted to undergraduate courses in Information Systems, Cybersecurity, and Computer Science. Other courses may be developed to fit the successful candidate’s expertise and program demand as approved by the School Chair.
  2. Provides quality learning experiences for all students enrolled in accordance with their needs and abilities while maintaining rigor and the basic integrity of the course’s standards and objectives.
  3. Provides an accessible course syllabus that states clear objectives and evaluation criteria for each course taught; follows the Curriculum Committee’s guidelines regarding course syllabi; integrates appropriate College learning goals into each course, evaluates student performance in light of these objectives and criteria, and performs and reports routine assessment as required by the College, school, department or program.
  4. Teaches courses in a variety of environments and modes as required. This includes teaching in the standard classroom and through alternative methods, such as online and HyFlex. Candidates should be passionate educators who can facilitate the learning of diverse students.
  5. Maintains an appropriate schedule of office hours that allows on-campus and distance education students to interact and ask questions.
  6. Advises students clearly and effectively.
  7. Recommends course schedules to the School Chair and/or facilitator; recruits and mentors adjunct instructors as assigned; recommends new courses as needed.
  8. Regularly adapts department curriculum and program learning outcomes to remain current and responsive to industry demands.
  9. Develops productive working relationships with professionals in this discipline in the College’s service area to solicit cooperation and support for curricular planning and other functions.
  10. Develops and maintains relationships with transfer institutions, governmental bodies and other organizations, and potential partner institutions to grow and maintain the department. Looks for opportunities to expand the program and obtain special designations that will enhance the student experience.

 

Other Related Duties

  1. Works with the School Chair to develop an individual professional development plan that will benefit the individual and Western and completes all elements of Annual Faculty End of Year Assessment.
  2. Assists the School Chair in all school and department activities as requested including attending school meetings, completing school and department duties and paperwork, and by participating in program review, assessment, and departmental activities.
  3. Assists in the College’s student recruitment program by cooperating with the Director of Admissions and Advising and Senior Outreach Coordinator, visiting area schools, encouraging students to attend Western, and promoting the value of the college; assists in updating the department’s web pages.
  4. Serves as a resource to the community by being willing to speak to groups, answer specific inquiries, assist with research projects and workshops, locate information, and perform other related tasks.
  5. Assists in developing a well-rounded, usable library collection in discipline; teaches the proper use of library and Internet resources.
  6. Collaborates with the IT department to ensure students have access to appropriate hardware and software to provide adequate experience in field of study.
  7. Works with staff of the various College service departments (e.g. Peer Tutor Center, Wellbeing and Accessibility, etc.).
  8. Becomes familiar with the budgeting process of the college; assists School Chair and department facilitator with preparing annual and biennial budgets; limits departmental expenditures to budgeted levels.
  9. Participates actively in the College’s assessment program to develop a more effective learning environment for all Western students.
  10. Assists part-time instructors on campus and in Western’s outreach areas to maintain quality instruction consistent with campus programs; reviews applications of adjunct faculty.
  11. Submits End of Year Assessment as required.
  12. Stays current by attending conferences, seminars, and workshops, and by reading appropriate professional literature.
  13. Meets assigned deadlines.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works in classroom and/or lab conditions and, occasionally, may provide training at an employer’s work site. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Employees are required to travel and may be required to walk distances across campus.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science or closely related discipline. For those who do not exactly meet all the minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience that has provided comparable knowledge and abilities may be acceptable.
  2. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  3. Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate effectively with a diversity of colleagues and students.
  4. Expert experience with computer hardware, software, operating systems (both Windows and Linux), networking typologies and components, cybersecurity and digital forensics concepts, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and Blockchain databases
  5. Experience with programming languages including but not limited to Python, C++, Java, JavaScript, HTML, SQL.
  6. Experience with Snort, Wireshark, Kali Linux, Nmap, Nessus, and Hashcat as well as Security Information and even Management (SIEM) and Security Orchestration Automation and Response (SOAR) tools to aggregate and analyze activity.

Equivalency StatementFor those who do not exactly meet all the minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience, which has provided comparable knowledge and abilities, may be acceptable.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Masters or Doctorate in Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or closely related discipline or Master’s Degree in any field, with 18 credits in Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Information technology, Computer Science, or related coursework and/or certification from an accredited institution (degree completion required by August 15, 2023).
  2. Security Plus Certification
  3. Workforce experience in the subject-matter area.
  4. Experience using active approaches to learning; experience using alternative methods of learning, such as interactive software, Internet, or individualized modular programs.
  5. Active participation in relevant professional organizations.
  6. Demonstrated proficiency in college-level teaching for at minimum 2 years (or the equivalency of 2 years full-time); teaching experience as a teaching assistant or adjunct instructor may count toward the requirement; community college experience preferred.
